8 Simple Ways to Decorate Home with Things You Already Have

Decorating can be quite costly, especially if you decide to move things around in your home every year. However, with a bit of creativity, you can make your existing furniture and household items look like they were bought from an expensive home shop. Although there are professional ways to get your home decorated, the best way is to do it yourself. First, attempt to clean the place and then do some DIY projects. The ideas below will help you brighten up your home without spending too much money.

1. Brighten your home with one colour.

Use a single colour to brighten up a room. The effect is most striking when the colour is a vibrant primary shade, such as red, blue or yellow. Choose a couple of items you really love in this colour and place them around the room together. This could be anything from an armchair and cushions to books, lamps, artwork and flowers. Throw rugs and runners can also add different hues to the floor of a space and create more visual interest.

2. Arrange flowers to beautify your home.

If you have a garden or a few indoor plants, you can make beautiful arrangements for your home using the flowers and foliage.

For example, flowers are one of the most inexpensive ways to add a pop of colour to any room. The trick is to arrange them in a way that suits your personality and makes the room alive.

If you don't know how to arrange flowers, here are some simple tips for you:

In a vase - If you want something minimalistic and elegant, place a single stalk of your favourite flower in a vase. You can also put multiple flowers together in a bunch but make sure that they are all the same kind.

In a jar - If you want something more country-side looking, place some wildflowers in a glass jar or an old mason jar. You can also use other containers like vintage pots or even plastic cups with wrappers removed (make sure that the container is clean).

Potted: For something long-lasting, try planting your favourite flower in a pot and place it on your windowsill or your desk. You can also grow herbs if you enjoy cooking as much as I do!

3. Use natural elements such as rocks, twigs, and branches to decorate.

Natural elements are fantastic for bringing life into a room. The use of stone on an accent wall is lovely when paired with simple wooden furniture and leather accents. In some cases, this textural decoration is cheaper than painting or paper because you can find all of these things in nature for free! Look around your neighbourhood for these items or do a little scavenging in the woods.

4. Use a variety of lighting.

Strategic lighting is an essential component in creating an inviting and comfortable home. Natural light is always ideal, but that's not always an option, so using various types of artificial light can help create the right mood.

There are three basic types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. Ambient lighting is the general light that illuminates an entire room. Task lighting is used to illustrate a work or reading area. Accent lighting can make a dramatic statement or draw attention to a particular item or site. You can use all three types of lighting in nearly every part of your home. The key is to use each one effectively and in moderation to don't overwhelm the space. Table and floor lamps can create warm pools of light within a room. Adding task and accent lighting with swing arm wall lights or track lighting can be helpful for workspaces such as kitchens and offices, as well as reading nooks.

5. Make use of what you already have.

It's incredible how much stuff we accumulate over time. Instead of buying new things, try putting together a fresh look with what you already own. For example, try moving your furniture around to create a unique look. You may be surprised at how just rearranging the room can give it a whole new feel. Another way to spruce up your spaces is by moving items from one room to another. Suppose you've got picture frames in the den that would look great in the living room, move them over and see how they fit into the living room decor. Try hanging your artwork and photographs at different heights and in new configurations. Rearrange your furniture to create more space or a more exciting layout. If you've had the same sofa for several years, give it an instant update by changing out the throw pillows or adding a blanket or colourful table runner.

6. Give Old Furniture a New Look

If you don't have the budget to buy new things, don't worry. You can makeover existing furniture in your home and give it a unique look. All you need is some paint and creativity to turn the old into something new.

From old chairs to cabinets and tables, anything can be given a fresh look with paint.

You can also try changing only some of the parts of the furniture. For example, if you have an old desk with a worn-out top, consider replacing it with a piece of glass or even marble for an instant upgrade. You can also replace knobs on cabinets or drawers with something more contemporary to give an instant facelift.

If you don't like painting, try using wallpaper instead. Wallpaper comes in all sorts of colours and patterns now, so there is undoubtedly one that will suit your style.

For a bonus, take advantage of those blank walls in your house and hang up some artwork or paintings that you already have. Artwork adds dimension to any room and can make a significant impact without spending much money at all.

7. Add a large mirror in the living room or bedroom.

Mirrors are great for making a room appear larger and more open, but if the mirror is too small or awkwardly placed, it can make the room feel smaller and more cramped. For example, suppose you place a small mirror directly over the fireplace mantel. In that case, it will draw attention to the mantels height rather than its width. Instead, go with a large mirror that spans from wall to wall or floor-to-ceiling and leave enough space on each side for plants, artwork or other decorative objects.

8. Decorate your home with easy-to-do DIY projects.

Just about everyone wants to make their home look more beautiful. The problem is that not everyone has a lot of money to spend on decorating. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to spruce up your home without spending a fortune.

You need to find some easy DIY projects that won't break the bank and don't require you to have a lot of experience.

Decorate with Washtubs

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to decorate your patio or deck, consider picking up an old galvanized washtub at a flea market or secondhand store. They're cheap and make great planters for flowers, shrubs, and even small trees. Here's a tip: If you want to plant something in the tub but don't want it sitting in water, just put a pot inside it along with some packing peanuts or Styrofoam chunks. That will allow excess moisture to drain away from the roots while keeping the seeds moist enough so they will grow.

Install Wood Trim

You can give your place a stylish look by simply installing some wood trim around the baseboard and door frames in your house. It's relatively inexpensive, and it's easy enough that most people can do it independently.

As you can see, there are many ways to decorate your home without spending too much money. Instead of spending money on expensive furniture and decorations, use the things you already have. Do some DIY projects, decorate with bookshelves and old trunks, or even try creating a room inside a closet. The ideas above are only a fraction of what you can do with simple household items. Start looking around, get creative, and be willing to sacrifice some comfort and convenience if needed. Who knows? If you are creative, you might be able to turn your house into a showpiece by using the items listed above. So now that you know how to decorate your home with cheap things, have fun!
